Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
