As any major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment.
