Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
