JP Morgan Demands Biometric Data for Corporate HQ Entry

JP Morgan Chase has informed personnel working at its new headquarters in Manhattan that they must share their biometric data to gain entry the multibillion-dollar building.

Change from Optional to Required

The banking corporation had originally intended for the enrollment of physical identifiers at its new skyscraper to be voluntary.

Yet, staff of the biggest American bank who have begun work at the corporate hub since August have obtained emails stating that physical scan entry was now "required".

How Biometric Access Works

The new entry system requires personnel to provide their hand geometry to enter security gates in the lobby in place of using their access passes.

Headquarters Details

The bank's headquarters, which allegedly cost three billion dollars to construct, will in time function as a workplace for ten thousand employees once it is fully occupied later this year.

Security Rationale

The banking institution did not provide a statement but it is assumed that the use of biological markers for access is created to make the building better protected.

Alternative Access Methods

There are exceptions for some employees who will continue to have the option to use a badge for entry, although the requirements for who will utilize more traditional ID access remains unclear.

Complementary Digital Tools

In addition to the implementation of biometric readers, the bank has also introduced the "JPMC Work" smartphone application, which functions as a virtual ID and portal for employee services.

The application permits users to coordinate visitor access, navigate indoor maps of the premises and arrange in advance food from the facility's multiple on-site dining vendors.

Industry-Wide Trends

The introduction of tighter entry controls comes as business organizations, particularly those with significant operations in NYC, look to increase security following the attack of the top executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in summer.

The CEO, the leader of the healthcare company, was the victim of the attack not far from the financial district.

Additional Office Considerations

It is not known if JP Morgan intends to implement physical identifier entry for employees at its branches in other major financial centres, such as London.

Corporate Surveillance Context

The decision comes during controversy over the employment of systems to observe staff by their organizations, including monitoring physical presence metrics.

In recent months, all the bank's employees on mixed remote-office plans were told they have to report to the office full-time.

Management Commentary

The bank's chief executive, the financial executive, has described JP Morgan's state-of-the-art tower as a "tangible expression" of the company.

The executive, one of the global financial leaders, recently warned that the probability of the financial markets experiencing a decline was far greater than many investors anticipated.
