Courageous Train Staff Member Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries During Multiple Knife Incident on Express Service
A brave train staff member who intervened to save travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Incident
Surveillance footage allegedly depicts the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for interrogation. Authorities declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Crisis Reaction and Consequences
The event on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five individuals have now been released from hospital.
A bystander recorded the individual brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted officers on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the brave member of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a senior law enforcement officer.
Labor Response and Calls for Action
Train unions were swift to praise staff and demand increased action. One union leader said he would be “seeking immediate discussions with authorities, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the strongest possible assistance, resources and effective procedures in operation”.
A different association leader urged the train operator and government “to move quickly to examine security, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Operator Praised for Rapid Action
The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He did not halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” stated a union official.
Additional Details
Police stated they received the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted at first wondering if the event was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from people's expressions that it was serious.
Police have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the incident was a terrorist attack and have asked the community to come forward with any additional information.
Train operations on the impacted line are anticipated to have disruption until the following day, with travelers recommended to postpone their journeys where feasible.
