RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.
The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
