Administration Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but not the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
